I would say no. Somebody owns the copyright to that pattern and instructions. Taking the pattern and making something more out of it for yourself would be fine – but wouldn’t make it yours to share. You could share your pattern in part but give credit to the square – like “I used the square from . . . ” without reproducing it and without infringing on the rights of the owners of the pattern.

C1 refers to color 1. So:
Using Color 1 chain 72, slip stitch (insert hook into first chain, pull through all loops on hook) to form ring. Chain 1, {double crochet (yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2, yarn over, pull through 2), chain 2, double crochet (insert hook into same chain as first double crochet)} all in the same stitch as the slip stitch, then double crochet into the next 35 chains, then {double crochet, chain 2, double crochet} into the next chain.

About the other 32… Were there symbols in there, maybe indicating to repeat? I would just double crochet into them.

Maybe you could buy a small piece of cute fabric (unisex), cut it in the shape of a bib, and then sew on some cute crochet edging. Leave a chain tail at both edges in the back so she can tie a loose bow around her baby’s neck. Just a thought!

It doesn’t just say 17 because Wavy Stitch is a stitch pattern that you can repeat as many times as you need. To get this particular pattern to repeat properly, you need to work it over a *multiple of 13* stitches plus an additional 4 stitches (so you would need to work it over 17, 30, 43, etc. Stitches), which is different from saying “multiples of 17″.

You start under the Blanket section, NOT the Wavy Stitch section (usually you start where the directions specifically tell you how many chains to make). When you get to the part that says to work in Wavy Stitch, then you refer to the Wavy Stitch section. They separate the stitch pattern from the actual directions to save space and avoid repeating the same thing over and over.

These hats are not very common these days (thread crochet, that is). You might try looking for antique or vintage patterns. The antique pattern library (www.antiquepatternlibrary.org) has a large number of old needlework books for you to browse.

It sounds as though you are crocheting a baby hat that is sized for a newborn baby and you want to make it for an older baby.

Here’s what I’d do to go from approximately 14″-16″ (average 15″) to approximately 16″-18″ (average 17″).
1. To get the diameter of a circle that’s 15″ around, divide by pi (3.1415927) or approximately 3-1/7 or even, roughly, 3. 15″ / 3 = 5″ approximately.
2. To get the diameter of a circle that’s 17″ around, again, divide by roughly 3: 17″ / 3 = 5-2/3″. Since this is a rough measurement and 5-1/2″ is easier to see on a ruler, let’s call that 5-1/2″.

You want to increase the basic circle of the hat from approximately 5″ across to approximately 5-1/2″ across before you quit increasing for the top and start working on the sides.

The first thing to do is measure the diameter of the hat after you have completed the 6th round. If it measures less than 5-1/2″, increase on Round 7 in the same pattern you used for increasing on the previous rounds:
Round 7: 1 HDC in-between each of the next 3 st’s, 2 HDC in next space; continue around to beg marker. (60 HDC total)

It depends on what yarn you are planning to use, if you’re improvising the pattern, and the look you’re going after. Usually, a pattern will suggest the hook according to the yarn.

For instance, medium weight yarn (formerly worsted weight) usually uses sizes F-H.

Bulky yarn will require I-K.

If you want a lacy look with medium yarn, then choose a thicker hook like a J.

If the pattern specifies a certain gauge (number of stitches per inch) then it really doesn’t matter what hook size you’re using, what you need is to achieve the gauge.

Substitute the word *skip* for the word *miss* and see if that helps you out. It is rather oddly writtten. Basically you are making what appears to be open spaces in the row after the first stitch. So, it’s made a dc in the 4th ch from the hook, ch 1, skip 1 (the next st in the chain, first space made), then dc, ch 1, skip 1,two times, then make a *group* of stitches in the ch by making 1 dc, ch 1 in that stitch 4 times (8 stitches total from that one chain), skip 1.

Now it also looks like the pattern is missing an asterisk to delineate the end of the first repeat sequence before the double asterisk sequence starts, but I suspect it should be after the increase popcorn, or shell (can’t tell what it should be from that picture) after the miss next ch. But without sitting down and working the numbers out, I can’t tell just from reading it. I’d be inclined to e-mail Michael’s and ask them if there is an errata sheet for this with a correction.
