Donald asks…
Where to find a crochet cropped top swimsuit cover up?
I’ve seen them on tumblr and I absolutely adore them but I can’t seem to find them when I go shopping.
I really like the crochet swimsuit cover ups that are more poncho-like too.

Forever 21 has a colorful one.
It pretty much looks like your grandma busted on you.

Lizzie asks…
Starting to crochet… what to buy?
I’ve recently moved across the country alone, and I have found myself with a lot of free time. I figure it’s the perfect time to teach myself to crochet, something I have always wanted to do. I really want to learn how to make shawls/ponchos, which I absolutely adore.
I think it would be awesome to be able to make my own, exactly how I want them to look. My grandmother tried teaching me when I was a kid, I wish I would have paid more attention!
So, first of all, what to I need to buy to get started? Also, is a poncho too far out of my reach for a while, or is it a project I could learn to make pretty early on? I know I will have to start with pot holders and such, but is it something I could do soon, as long as it’s a simple one?
Thank you! Any other tips/advice would be awesome!

What I recommend is that you buy a colorful ball of inexpensive yarn in Category 4–Worsted and a hook that works with your yarn, an H or I hook.
Then access the Learn to Crochet section of Lion Brand’s Learning Center: http://cache.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/faq-search.cgi?store=/stores/eyarn&learnToCrochet=1 . You will find instructions and videos that will walk you through the beginning steps.
When you feel comfortable with the basics, there are a couple of YouTube series that you may find helpful. Both are amateur series that use good techniques: Beth In Texas and Art of Crochet by Teresa.

Shawls vary from embarrassingly easy to frustratingly difficult. Pick an easy one, and it can be your next project after learning Granny squares. In fact, an easy shawl looks like a giant Granny square cut on the diagonal and fringed on the two short sides.
